Libertarian paternalism is the idea that it is possible and legitimate for institutions to influence behaviour while respecting freedom of choice (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Libertarian_paternalism).
The term was coined by Richard Thaler (and Cass Sunstein), who defended the philosophy in his book Nudge.
