Policy 713

New Brunswick policy establishing requirements for public schools to provide educational environments accessible to LGBTQ students. Enacted in 2020.

Modified in 2023 to forbid teachers from using students' chosen names and pronouns without parental consent. This appears to have been motivated by a small email campaign protesting drag storytime events in schools.1

The review and modification were a huge political issue, leading to ministerial resignations, a leadership review of premier Blaine Higgs, and a judicial review of the changes (resulting in an attempt by the province to dissolve a school district funding the legal challenge).

4 My Canada (Faytene Grasseschi) conducted a Conservative membership drive to support Higgs in the leadership review.2

Led to copycat Bill 137 in Saskatchewan. Action4Canada claims to have sent over 10k emails to Moe and Education Minister Dustin Duncan lobbying in support,3 though these don't appear in the government's response to a CBC FOI request.4
