Sail

SCAMP: “Mini microcruiser” with CNC kits available
Car-toppable catamarans: Nacra 4.5, Dart 15, TOPCAT, Pixie (home build)

Tacking

  1. Put one wrap on the windward winch (one! keeps the line where you want it, but low friction)
  2. Uncleat jib sheet and hold it in your hand
  3. Wait for sail to depower (flap flap)
  4. Release sheet
  5. Haul in sheet on the other side before the sail repowers (move quickly. if you're too slow and the sail powers up before you're done, you'll need the winch)
  6. Trim for new course
  7. Cleat

Lunar distance: Find longitude based on the position of the moon (given an almanac of positions predicted in advance)

Certifications (Are international certifications worth it?)

RYA (Royal Yachting Association) (UK): Sophisticated program, generally well-regarded
ISSA (International Sailing School Association): Fairly widely recognized. No renewal required
IYT (International Yacht Training): US/Canadian alternative to RYA. Offers separate recreational and professional certifications. Must revalidate every 5 years (fairly cheap/easy)
ICC (International Certificate of Competence): EU effort at a standardized credential. RYA, ISSA, IYT can issue. Must renew every 5 years.
ASA (American Sailing Association): US Coast Guard approved, shorter courses, less widely recognized outside North America
