Describes a situation in which individuals sharing a resource take actions that benefit them personally but impoverish the shared resource.
Originated with a 1968 paper by Garrett Hardin published in Science. Hardin later admitted he got quite a lot wrong, in particular that management of commons is quite possible - there is no anthropological reason to accept that people are simple utility-maximizers.
